Removing permanent jewellery

Can You Remove Permanent Jewellery? Safe Removal Guide

The short answer is yes, you can remove permanent jewellery. Here is a simple guide that explains when you might need to take it off, how to remove a welded bracelet safely at home, and how we can help you re weld it in our studio in Shropshire and Powys.

Can you remove permanent jewellery?

Yes. Permanent jewellery is clasp free, not life bound. If you ever need to take it off, a careful snip at the small welded ring or a single link will open the chain. Keep the chain safe so it can be re welded later.

When you might need to remove it

  • Medical scans or procedures such as MRI or surgery if advised by your clinician.
  • Workplace or sport rules where no jewellery is allowed.
  • Tightness or discomfort if your fit changes over time.
  • Style change if you want to swap the chain or add new details.
  • Repair after an accidental snag or break.

Tools you will need at home

  • Sharp scissors or nail clippers. For thicker links, small flush cutters are ideal.
  • A thin card or folded paper to slide under the chain and protect your skin.
  • Good lighting and a mirror if you are removing a necklace or anklet.
  • A small resealable bag or box to store the chain and any charms safely.

How to remove a welded bracelet safely

  1. Wash and dry your hands. Work in good light and sit down so you can see clearly.
  2. Slide a thin card under the chain to create a barrier between the metal and your skin.
  3. Find the welded ring if you can. If not, pick any single link near the join.
  4. Make one clean cut with scissors or clippers. Do not twist or pull the chain.
  5. Remove gently and place the chain and charms in a resealable bag.
  6. Contact us if you want it re welded, resized or converted to a clasp bracelet.

If you are not confident doing this yourself, we can remove it for you in minutes during a quick appointment.

In studio removal and re weld

Prefer us to handle it for you? Book a short visit at our Llanymynech or Oswestry studio and we will remove your piece safely, then re weld when you are ready. We also run pop ups in Shrewsbury, Welshpool, Telford and nearby towns. See dates on our Permanent Jewellery page.

Reusing your chain and charms

Most pieces can be re welded using the same chain. If a single link was snipped, we simply re join it. You can also take the chance to add charms or switch to a different look using sterling silver or gold chains. If you would rather have a traditional clasp, we can convert your chain into a standard bracelet or anklet.

Common questions

Will cutting damage the whole chain?

No. You are cutting one link. The rest of the chain stays intact and can usually be re welded.

Do I need to remove it for airport security?

Small sterling silver or gold chains rarely cause issues at security. If you are asked to remove all jewellery, you can snip the link and bring it to us to re weld afterwards.

Can you remove it for me?

Yes. Book a short in studio appointment and we will remove it safely. We can also re weld, resize or convert it to a clasp piece. Use our Get In Touch page if you need advice before you visit.

What if it broke by accident?

Keep the chain and any charms. Most breaks are quick to fix. We will assess the chain and advise on a repair or re weld.
