How permanent jewellery works

How Does Permanent Jewellery Work? Step by Step Welding Guide

If you are curious about how permanent jewellery actually works, here is a clear, simple guide. We will walk you through the welding process from chain choice to the moment you leave wearing your clasp free bracelet, anklet, necklace or ring.

Permanent jewellery in one minute

Permanent jewellery is a fine chain measured to you and closed with a micro weld instead of a clasp. There is no heat on your skin. The result is a seamless piece you can wear every day with no faff.

At Lae Jewellery we use sterling silver and gold chains. You can keep it minimal or add small charms for a personalised finish. See service info and availability on our Permanent Jewellery page.

Choosing your chain and details

  • Metals: sterling silver for bright versatility, gold for a luxe look with excellent durability.
  • Styles: classic cable, curb, paperclip and more. Pick one that suits your daily wardrobe.
  • Accents: optional charms for subtle colour and meaning.

Custom fitting for comfort

We measure the chain directly on you so it sits the way you like it. Expect a comfortable drape that moves with your wrist or ankle. We trim the chain to length so the fit is bespoke.

The quick micro weld step by step

  1. Preparation: we position the chain ends together and place a small protective shield between the chain and your skin.
  2. Protective eyewear: you pop on glasses for the brief flash of light.
  3. Micro weld: a precise pulse fuses the link closed. It is over in a second and you do not feel heat.
  4. Polish and check: we smooth the join and check the drape and movement.

Total time in the chair is typically a few minutes. Choosing your chain often takes longer than the weld itself.

Safety and comfort

The weld targets the metal only. We place a shield on your skin and the pulse is very localised. Most people describe the process as quick and painless. If you have a pacemaker or other electronic implant, please get in touch before booking so we can advise. For younger clients we generally require a parent or guardian present.

Aftercare and everyday wear

  • Water and sleep: you can shower, sleep and exercise in your piece.
  • Pools and products: rinse after pools and avoid spraying perfume or hairspray directly onto the chain.
  • Shine: give sterling silver an occasional polish. See our Jewellery Care tips.

Removal and re welding

Although it is called permanent, you can remove your piece with a careful snip at the welded ring or a single link. Keep the chain safe. We can re weld or adjust at a later appointment if you wish.
