Gold Filled vs Gold Plated Jewellery: What Is the Difference?

What Is Gold Filled Jewellery?
Gold filled jewellery has a thick layer of real gold (usually 14ct) mechanically bonded to a base metal core under heat and pressure. By law, the gold layer must be at least 5% of the total weight. That makes it 50 to 100 times thicker than gold plating.
The result is a piece that looks, feels, and wears like solid gold at a fraction of the cost. Gold filled jewellery will not tarnish, flake, or rub off under normal wear. What Is Gold Plated Jewellery?
Gold plated jewellery has a very thin layer of gold (usually less than 0.5 microns) applied to a base metal through electroplating. It looks beautiful when new, identical to gold filled in a photograph, but the plating wears off with regular use.
Most gold plated pieces last between 6 and 12 months of daily wear before the base metal starts showing through. Once it does, the piece can cause skin reactions if the base metal contains nickel or copper.

Which Should You Choose?
My honest advice: if you are buying jewellery you plan to wear every day, choose gold filled. The initial cost is higher, but the piece will last decades. Per wear, it is actually cheaper than replacing gold plated pieces every year.
Gold plated is fine for trend pieces, fashion jewellery you wear occasionally, or if you want to try a style before committing. Just know it will not last forever.
What About Gold Vermeil?
Gold vermeil (pronounced "ver-may") sits between the two. The base metal must be sterling silver and the gold layer must be at least 2.5 microns thick. It is more durable than standard gold plating and kind to sensitive skin thanks to the silver base, but it will still wear over time with heavy use.
