Permanent vs Traditional Jewellery

Permanent Jewellery vs Traditional Jewellery: Which Is Right for You?

Permanent jewellery and traditional jewellery both have their place, but they serve different purposes. If you want a piece you never take off, that becomes part of you, and that holds sentimental meaning for years to come, permanent jewellery is the better choice. If you prefer to swap your jewellery daily to match your outfit, traditional pieces give you that flexibility. I offer both from my studio in Four Crosses, Powys, and I genuinely believe they complement each other beautifully.

I provide permanent jewellery across Shropshire and Powys, and I also handcraft a full range of traditional bracelets, necklaces, rings, earrings, and anklets. This guide breaks down exactly how the two compare so you can decide which is right for you.

What Is Permanent Jewellery?

Permanent jewellery is a chain bracelet, anklet, or necklace that I custom-fit to your wrist, ankle, or neck and then weld shut using a Zapp Plus 2 micro-welder. There is no clasp. The chain sits flush against your skin and stays there for as long as you choose to wear it.

The process takes about ten minutes, is completely painless, and I place a thin leather barrier between the chain and your skin during welding for safety. Prices start from £45, and you can choose from sterling silver 925 or 14ct gold filled chains. I currently offer permanent jewellery appointments in Shrewsbury, Telford, Oswestry, Welshpool, Ludlow, Newtown, and Newport.

What Is Traditional Jewellery?

Traditional jewellery covers everything with a clasp, closure, or removable design. This includes bracelets with lobster clasps, necklaces with spring rings, earrings with hooks or posts, and rings you can slide on and off. Every piece I handcraft in my studio falls into this category unless it is welded shut.

Traditional jewellery gives you the freedom to change your look daily. You can layer different pieces, match metals to your outfit, or save certain items for special occasions.

Why I Love Permanent Jewellery

I founded Lae Jewellery in 2020 at my kitchen table during lockdown, and permanent jewellery is one of the services I am most passionate about. There is something genuinely special about welding a bracelet onto someone's wrist and knowing it will stay there through every shower, every holiday, and every milestone.

The most popular bookings I see are best friends getting matching bracelets, couples marking an anniversary, and mothers and daughters sharing a moment together. It is the experience as much as the jewellery itself that makes it meaningful.

When Traditional Jewellery Is the Better Choice

If you love variety, traditional jewellery gives you more flexibility. My Create Your Own range lets you design a completely bespoke bracelet, ring, necklace, earrings, or anklet by choosing every gemstone, bead, and charm yourself. With over 30 gemstones to choose from, no two pieces need to look the same.

Traditional pieces also make wonderful gifts because you can wrap them and present them in a box. Permanent jewellery is something you experience together in person, which is beautiful in its own way, but traditional jewellery suits occasions where you want to surprise someone.

Can You Have Both?

Absolutely, and many of my customers do. They wear a permanent bracelet as their everyday base piece and then layer traditional bracelets, rings, or necklaces on top. The permanent piece becomes the constant, and the traditional pieces change with their mood. I use the same quality materials for both: sterling silver 925 (92.5% pure silver) and 14ct gold filled (50 to 100 times thicker than gold plating, lasting 10 to 30 years).

You can read more about the metals I use on my materials guide.

What About Removal?

One of the most common questions I get is whether permanent jewellery can be removed. The answer is yes. You simply cut it off with a pair of scissors, and I can re-weld it for you later if you change your mind. This makes it practical for medical procedures, travel, or any situation where you need it off temporarily. I have written a full guide on removing permanent jewellery if you want more detail.

How to Book

I offer permanent jewellery appointments across seven locations in Shropshire and Powys. Prices start from £45, and the whole process takes about ten minutes. You can book directly through my SumUp page, or get in touch if you have any questions at all. I welcome ages 10 and above (with a guardian present for under-18s).

Is permanent jewellery worth it?

Yes. For the price (from £45), you get a handcrafted chain in sterling silver or 14ct gold filled that is custom-fitted to your exact size, welded with a professional Zapp Plus 2 micro-welder, and built to last years. There is no clasp to break, no sizing to worry about, and the sentimental value of the experience makes it something truly special.

Does permanent jewellery hurt?

Not at all. The welding process is completely painless. I use a Zapp Plus 2 micro-welder that creates a tiny spark to join the chain, and I always place a thin leather barrier between your skin and the jewellery. Most people say they barely feel anything. The whole fitting takes about ten minutes.

Can you shower with permanent jewellery?

Yes. Both sterling silver 925 and 14ct gold filled are water resistant, so you can shower, swim, and wash your hands without removing your permanent jewellery. This is one of the biggest advantages over traditional jewellery with delicate clasps or gemstones that need to be taken off around water.

What is the difference between permanent jewellery and a normal bracelet?

The main difference is that permanent jewellery has no clasp. It is welded shut directly on your wrist (or ankle or neck) so it sits perfectly flush and never falls off. A traditional bracelet has a clasp you open and close, which means it can shift, loosen over time, or be forgotten at home. Permanent jewellery becomes part of your daily life without any thought.

If you have questions about permanent jewellery, traditional pieces, or anything else, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I am always happy to help.
