Permanent jewellery is a chain bracelet, anklet, or necklace that is custom-fitted to your wrist, ankle, or neck and welded shut using a micro-welder. There is no clasp. The chain sits flush against your skin, and you wear it every day without ever taking it off. If you are curious about what permanent jewellery means and where the concept came from, I have a dedicated article on that too. I offer permanent jewellery across Shropshire and Powys from £45, and this guide covers everything you need to know before booking.
I started Lae Jewellery at my kitchen table during the first lockdown in 2020. Permanent jewellery quickly became one of my favourite services to offer because there is something special about welding a piece of jewellery onto someone and knowing they will wear it every single day. Whether you are treating yourself, celebrating a friendship, marking a milestone, or looking for a unique hen party experience, this guide will walk you through the whole process from start to finish.
How Permanent Jewellery Works
The process is simple, quick, and completely painless. Unlike a traditional bracelet or necklace that comes with a clasp, permanent jewellery is welded directly onto your body using a specialist micro-welder. The result is a seamless chain that looks and feels as though it has always been there. Here is how it works, step by step:
- Choose your chain. You pick from a range of styles in either 14ct gold filled or sterling silver 925.
- Get measured. I wrap the chain around your wrist, ankle, or neck to find the perfect fit.
- Cut to size. The chain is trimmed to your exact measurement so it sits comfortably with no excess.
- Leather barrier in place. I slide a thin leather barrier between your skin and the chain to protect you during the weld.
- Weld shut. Using my Zapp Plus 2 micro-welder, I fuse the two ends of the chain together in a single spark. The spark only touches the metal, never your skin.
The whole thing takes about ten minutes. You walk in with bare skin and walk out with a piece of jewellery you never have to think about again. There is no glue, no soldering paste, and no heat that touches your body. The Zapp Plus 2 creates a clean, precise weld that is virtually invisible once it is finished.
For a deeper look at how the welding process works, I have written a separate guide that goes into even more detail. I always say the hardest part is choosing which chain you want. Once you have decided, the rest is over before you know it.
What Materials Are Used?
I only use metals that are built to last. Every permanent jewellery chain I weld is made from one of two materials, and both are chosen because they can handle daily wear without losing their beauty:
- 14ct Gold Filled: This is not plating. Gold filled is 50 to 100 times thicker than gold plating, with a real layer of 14ct gold mechanically bonded under heat and pressure. It will not tarnish, flake, or rub off, and it lasts 10 to 30 years with daily wear.
- Sterling Silver 925: Made from 92.5% pure silver, sterling silver is kind to sensitive skin and will last decades with proper care. It develops a beautiful patina over time and can be polished and restored repeatedly. Read my tips on cleaning and caring for permanent jewellery to keep it looking its best.
Both metals are completely waterproof. You can swim, shower, and sleep wearing your permanent jewellery with total confidence. I chose these materials specifically because permanent jewellery is meant to stay on your body for years, and I would never weld something onto you that could not handle that.

How Much Does Permanent Jewellery Cost?
Permanent jewellery starts from £45. The final price depends on the chain style you choose, the length needed, and any add-ons such as charms, initials, or birthstones.
A small deposit is required when you book, and this is deducted from your final total on the day. There are no hidden fees. The price you see at your appointment is the price you pay. For a full breakdown, see my guide to permanent jewellery pricing.
You can book your appointment through my SumUp booking page. I keep my prices accessible because I believe beautiful, lasting jewellery should not cost a fortune. A permanent bracelet makes a meaningful gift for birthdays, anniversaries, friendship celebrations, or just because. Many of my customers come in pairs or small groups and make an experience of it together.
Can You Remove Permanent Jewellery?
Yes, absolutely. Despite the name, permanent jewellery can be removed whenever you need to. All it takes is a pair of household scissors. Snip the chain at the weld point, and it comes off in seconds with no pain at all. You do not need any specialist tools or a return visit to remove it.
If you need to remove it for a medical procedure such as an MRI, or for travel, work, or any other reason, you can always bring it back to me and I will re-weld it for you. Many of my customers have had their chains removed and re-welded multiple times over the years.
I have written a full guide on this topic if you would like more detail: can you remove permanent jewellery?
Is Permanent Jewellery Safe?
Completely. The Zapp Plus 2 micro-welder I use produces a tiny spark that only makes contact with the metal chain. A thin leather barrier sits between the chain and your skin during the weld, so there is zero contact between the spark and your body.
Permanent jewellery is suitable for ages 10 and above, with guardian consent for anyone under 18. It is a popular choice for mother-daughter appointments, and I love seeing younger customers get excited about choosing their first piece of real jewellery.
The only contraindication is for people with pacemakers. I cannot weld on anyone who has one, as a safety precaution. If you have any concerns about medical conditions or sensitivities, feel free to get in touch before booking and I will be happy to advise.
Where Can I Get Permanent Jewellery?
I offer permanent jewellery from my home studio in Four Crosses, Powys (SY22 6NE), right on the border of Shropshire and Wales. I also run regular pop-up events across seven towns in the area:

What to Expect at Your Appointment
If you have never had permanent jewellery before, here is exactly what will happen:
- Arrive and choose your chain. Browse the styles I have with me and pick your preferred metal: 14ct gold filled or sterling silver.
- Add extras. If you want charms, initials, or birthstones, now is the time to choose them.
- I measure and cut. I wrap the chain around your wrist, ankle, or neck and cut it to your exact fit.
- Leather barrier goes on. A thin piece of leather is placed between your skin and the chain to keep you completely protected.
- One quick weld. I use the Zapp Plus 2 micro-welder to fuse the chain ends together. One small spark, and you are done.
The whole appointment takes about ten minutes. Most of that time is spent choosing your chain and chatting. The actual weld is over in a single second.
I find that first-timers are always surprised by how quick and easy it is. There is no preparation needed on your part. Just turn up, pick something beautiful, and leave wearing it forever.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does permanent jewellery hurt?
No, it is completely painless. The Zapp Plus 2 micro-welder spark only touches the metal, and a leather barrier protects your skin throughout the process. You might feel a tiny bit of warmth near the weld point, but nothing more than that. Children from age 10 have it done without any issue.
Can I wear permanent jewellery in water?
Yes. Both 14ct gold filled and sterling silver 925 are waterproof metals. You can swim in the sea, use a hot tub, shower every day, and wash your hands as often as you like without ever worrying about your chain. That is the whole point of permanent jewellery: it stays on through everything.
How long does permanent jewellery last?
14ct gold filled chains last 10 to 30 years with daily wear because the gold layer is mechanically bonded, not electroplated. Sterling silver 925 lasts decades and can be polished and restored over time. These are real, high-quality metals, not plated costume pieces that wear through after a few months. I cover this in full detail in my guide on how long permanent jewellery lasts.
Can I get permanent jewellery for a hen party?
Absolutely. Group bookings are one of my favourite things. Whether it is a hen party, birthday celebration, baby shower, or just a group of friends who want matching bracelets to remember the day by, I can accommodate groups of all sizes. Everyone gets to choose their own chain style and metal, so each piece is still personal. book a permanent jewellery group session.
What if I need to have an MRI?
Simply cut the chain off with a pair of household scissors before your scan. It takes seconds and is completely painless. Keep the chain safe, and afterwards bring it back to me. I will re-weld it for you so you can carry on wearing it as before.
Is permanent jewellery just for bracelets?
Not at all. I also weld permanent anklets and permanent necklaces. The process is exactly the same regardless of where the chain goes. Bracelets are the most popular choice, but anklets are a close second, especially in the warmer months.

I am a self-taught artisan, and I have been handcrafting jewellery since I started Lae Jewellery at my kitchen table during the 2020 lockdown. What began as making bracelets for friends and family grew into a full demi-fine jewellery business, and permanent jewellery has become one of the most meaningful parts of what I do.
The name "Lae" comes from the initials of my little family: Lucy, Alastair, and Emma. That personal touch is in everything I create. When I weld a chain onto your wrist, it is not just metal; it is a moment, a memory, a connection you carry with you every day. If you have any questions about permanent jewellery, my materials, or anything else I offer, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
