Does sterling silver turn your finger green? Yes, it can. But it is completely harmless, and there are simple ways to stop it happening.
I get asked about this more than almost anything else, so I wanted to explain exactly what causes it and share the fixes I recommend to my own customers. If you are shopping for high-quality sterling silver jewellery, this is worth knowing.
Why Does Sterling Silver Leave a Green Mark?
Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver mixed with 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Copper is what gives sterling silver its strength and durability. Without it, pure silver would be far too soft to wear.
The green mark happens when copper reacts with moisture, salt, or acids on your skin. This produces copper chloride, which is a harmless green compound. It is not a sign of poor quality. It is simply chemistry.
A few things speed up this reaction:
- Sweat and humidity
- Hand cream, perfume, or soap residue
- Your individual skin pH (some people are more prone than others)
- Wearing your ring in water
5 Quick Fixes to Prevent Green Fingers
These are the methods I use myself and recommend to everyone who buys from me.
1. Keep your rings dry
Remove them before washing your hands, showering, swimming, or applying hand cream. Moisture is the biggest trigger.
2. Clean your silver regularly
Wash your rings with mild soap and warm water, then dry them completely with a soft cloth. Every purchase from Lae Jewellery includes a silver polishing cloth for exactly this reason.
3. Apply a thin barrier
A coat of clear nail varnish on the inside of the band creates a barrier between the copper and your skin. Reapply every few weeks as it wears off.
4. Rotate your pieces
Giving your skin a break between wears actually helps. And frequent wearing can slow tarnish too, because the natural oils on your skin provide a light protective layer.
5. Store them properly
Keep your jewellery in a dry, airtight pouch or box when you are not wearing it. Humidity causes tarnish even when you are not wearing a piece.
What if You Have Sensitive Skin?
If copper reactions are a regular problem for you, consider switching to rhodium-plated sterling silver or gold filled pieces. Both are much less reactive. If you are curious about how gold options compare, read my guide on gold filled vs gold plated. I also make adjustable rings on elastic thread with no metal touching the inside of your finger, which is perfect for anyone who struggles with discolouration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the green mark harmful?
No, not at all. Copper chloride is harmless and washes off with soap and water. It is purely cosmetic.
Which metals cause the worst discolouration?
Copper and brass are the most reactive. Silver plated jewellery, which has a very thin silver layer over a copper or brass base, tends to cause more discolouration than solid sterling silver. If you want to know the differences, I have written a full guide on silver plated vs sterling silver.
How do I remove green marks from my skin?
Soap and water will do it. The mark usually fades within a day or two on its own. A gentle exfoliating scrub can speed things up if you are in a hurry.
Does solid silver turn green less than plated?
Yes, significantly. Solid 925 sterling silver has a much lower copper content than silver plated pieces, where the thin silver layer wears off to expose the base metal underneath. That is why I only work with solid sterling silver and gold filled materials at Lae Jewellery.
I hope that helps. If you have any other questions about caring for your silver, you are always welcome to get in touch.
Rings That Will Not Turn Your Finger Green
Every ring I make at Lae Jewellery uses solid 925 sterling silver, which means far less chance of green marks compared to plated or cheap alloys. If you want complete peace of mind, try one of these:
- Create Your Own Gemstone Ring: pick your stone and I will handcraft it in solid sterling silver. Adjustable, so no resizing worries either.
- Create Your Own Ring: choose your beads and charms for a fully personalised band.
- Browse all rings: every piece is handcrafted in sterling silver or gold filled.
If you follow the tips above, green marks should never be a problem. But if you want jewellery made from materials that resist it from the start, read about the metals I use.
